Charter Schools
On "Stupid in America" I noticed that a lot of my peers have taken the side of Charter schools. Obviously, such institutions do have their advantages, but how many of us know anything about them outside what was said in the video? Are there any drawbacks? For what reasons might Charter schools not be the end-all say-all to solving education problems? I'm curious to see whether anyone has anything to say on the topic. Discuss?

SURE. schools are a good thing. charter schools are an even better thing. charter schools give the sutdent the choice to where he/she wants to go. the must be in constant competition with one another in order make students come to their school instead of their opponent's. competition breeds excellence. It's science.
Oh, fine, sure. Competition is vital. Trust me, I'm all with you on that one.
But I don't believe in "perfect" plans. Doesn't anyone see faults in the thinking behind charter schools?
Of course there is not one thing that will completely solve the problem, since everyone and every school is different. Some things will work for some schools but not others. I think being able to choose where to go school is better than there just being one school that students must go to, and it would make schools that aren't very good loose business, and eventually dissolve, hopefully.
oops I meant lose business...I can spell
Competition breeds excellence. Sweet, sweet excellence. That's why Charter schools will solve most of our problems
The pro's far outway the con's
What /are/ the cons? Money (funding)? The lack of restriction? The fact that students at charter schools may be recieving "more" than the students at district schools?
I'm not asking who's for charter schools. I think it's a lovely idea. And I do believe that competition breeds excellence. I also agree with what aimee said. But isn't that all stuff the video said? And isn't the video biased, too?
There are draw backs to charter schools, but there are draw backs to everything! I have friends who attend a charter school in Colorado and i am amazed at the education that those children are getting there! One of the boys is in first grade and he is already learning spanish! The other child is in 4th grade and he bought a book about the Roman Empire just because he thought it was interesting! The i.q. levels of these kids is crazy! But for kids that want to be challenged in school i think these types of schools are the perfect place for those individuals.
You can be biased towards what is right...not all bias is bad. I'm saying I agree with everything on the video, but seriously, the fact that something is biased, or takes one side, is not necessarily bad.
What would happen to the kids that did not want to be challenged? Wouldn't they be drawn to the "slacker" schools?
that's why we need to solve these problems within the current public school system and as early in the system as possible. That way they'll never want to slack
I think some kids will slack regardless...a lot of kdis in high school get want their GED and then to get out, even at branson. I know a lot of smart kids who take regular classes because they are lazy
oh on the comment from earlier I meant "I'm not saying I agree with everything..." wow why do I keep doing that?
