HOW CAN I KEEP FROM SINGING?
SO in response to the "Lemon Tree" That part really got visual in my mind for some reason. That's really hard to grasp that he could be singing as he's tossing bits and pieces of his buddy down out of a tree. Why do you think that he was singing? Do you think that it was to keep himself from cracking and going out of his mind?

I think you're right...and it goes along wit the weirdness and all the other stuff the author was saying about war before he describes it. I think it probably bothered O'Brien because he didn't go into detail, at least not in the part that I read--it's just one sentence. He might not have wanted to think about it for that long.
opps I menat with
crap I can't spell...meant*
I wonder why the soldier chose "Lemon Tree" to sing while picking out the pieces. I understand the connection between the soldier, Lemon, and "Lemon Tree"; however, I wouldn't choose a song that was strongly connected with such a horrible experience. I mean every time that song is played that depressing memory will be connected to the song... anywho...don't bother answering this because I am just rambling...
I think he was singing it it because he found the connection commical. I know that sounds horrible but its true, This happens through out the whole book. there is always the guy who finds the death funny in someway. Like how when Kiowa dies Azar says "Like those old cowboy movies. One more redskin bites the dirt." it seems to happen almost everytime
I think you probably haven't gotten to the real part about Curt Lemon yet, Aimee.
Also, I think the irony was sort of a distraction for him. The song paired with his task made for a horrible experience, but at the same time, it kept his mind detatched.
The song, Lemon Tree, represents how you have to be careful who you love, and O'Brien descirbed Rat and Lemon as a love story. In the time of war, you have no idea what is going to happen. Which is why you have to be careful and not be to emotionally attach to a person, even it is like loving your friend as your brother. So I saw it as a simple warning of how you never know what is going to happen because one wrong step might blow you to pieces.
