Well, obviously imagination plays a role in Frankenstein (as opposed to reason). What's more imaginative than creating and giving life to a monster?
Nature also played a large role in Frankenstein. As Courtney posted earlier, the weather helped to determine Harold's mood, as well as had a profound effect on Victor. Myth and superstition are also key in Frankenstein.
Victor is an obvious romantic hero. He is an artist--a creator--and is tragically flawed by his own self-centered nature.
Hurray for tragic flaws! I agree with Ali's post-anybody who can think up AND create a horrific giant living thinking being (with murderous tendencies) obviously has a "killer" imagination. BAHAHAHAHAHAHA
But yes. Romanticism. Not romance. BIG difference.
agreed....and the work does have all of the things that make it "romantic" however it doesnt seem to consider emotion important. Something the the above article includes in the list of things that make something romantic.
umm..are you sure it doesn't consider emotion? i'm pretty sure victor and harold have given us their stories with as much emotion as possible. (honestly, i'm beginning to think of both of them as drama queens. they really need to build a bridge and get over their issues. you can't change the past) anyways, their is definately emotion, as well as nature and imagination. i believe it should be considered romantic.
(and vanessa agrees. her computer sucks, so she helped me write this)
I think that emotion rather than reason plays a huge role in the novel with the creation of the monster, the unyeilding pursuit of knowdledge, the happiness, the anger, and what actions are taken becasue of these actions. That is why it is romantic, it is driven by emotion rather than reason, which is pretty stupid to do.
