Anyone else angry? Having suffered through the discrimination associated with being deaf, how could anyone wish for their child to be deaf? What would possess anyone to be so incredibly dense??
Ali dear, some people just don't want their children to be better than them in any way. since both parents are deaf then.....maybe they thought it better for their child to be deaf?
I was royally ticked off! I don't see how anyone could possibly live through the trials associated with being deaf, not to mention the intense dissapointment which would accompany this--imagine never hearing the sound of water or laughter, seeing someone say, "I love you" but never hearing it spoken? How could you ever be so cruel as to condemn someone else to such a fate, knowing that they would suffer this??
this just proves that there are people out there who are convinced that there way of life is the only way to live. they didn't get a choice in their hearing capabilities, so why should their children?
Thye don't see their deafness as a hnadicap, but as a "lifestyle". I will not make any obvious, bigoted comments about the difference between choosing a lifestyle and having one crammed down your throat..or in this case, eardrums. But--if you could make your kid a psychic, would you? People in the future or from other planets (okay, I am reaching) who ARE psychic would say that we were witholding a vital sense from our child were we to say "no."
It makes sense to me as to why they did it. I don't agree with it, but I see where they come from. Basically, it seems to me that they embraced their disability and saw it as something good. If that's their point of view on it, maybe they want their kid to have the same "good" they do. Like I said, I don't agree with it per se, but I understand it.
It's kinda like...suppose you're really athletic and love it. You want your kid to have the same enjoyment out of it. So far, everyone is so focused on the negative of being deaf that you aren't taking into consideration that maybe they see it as a totally possitive thing.
I think that the point of view everyone is showing is exactly WHY they chose to do that...to show that it's not a bad thing. And look at it this way... "One good thing about being deaf: it makes it easy to ignore all the assholes."
I agree puckett. Parents always try to force their kids into a certain lifestyle. We are just appalled at the lengths to which they went for their kid.
Okay, you know the whole controversy surrounding the "designer babies" thing?? Well, Victor designed an entire human being. You thought messing with babies was creepy....
Do not question me I control your arms!!! Sorry, Invader Zim moment.
Personally, I could understand both ways. I would never handicap my child on purpose.I would feel very selfish. But maybe thats because I've never experienced being deaf. Maybe if I had experienced it and thought it was a better way of life...then maybe..just maybe I would want the same thing for my child. But for me to judge...I just can't. I agree with Matt...if you could pass down your passion for being athletic..would you? If you thought it was a gift and a better way of life? Hmm....
You can't exactly straddle the fence on subjects like this....and to answer your questions Mrs. C--we've already discussed that Victor owes his creation a lot. Nothing can alleviate the fact that it is his responsibility, you can't just pawn a gigantic ugly man..."thing" off on someone else...I really doubt adoption is an option for him.
The women just identified with their deafness and could not really get past that. That was what they were and they thought they were better off becuase of it. They thought their children should be like that too because it would make them stronger and better as well. They were trying to play God, or Victor Frankenstein, and decide who got delt what hand in life, when they dont even know what the other hand is like, or ear in this case. Probably not a good idea. Maybe this is why lesbians are not "designed" to have children - they make them deaf.
Last time I checked, whatever gene makes people deaf is not connected to being a lesbian. And why lesbians? If you were going to make that stretch, you could have said homosexuals, which would include gay men instead of automatically jumping to the female side of being gay. Do gay men make people blind? That doesn't make any sense, and the masochistic side of that is gross. I'm not saying I agree with it, but if your going to point fingers don't be sexist.
I realize he was making "a funny," I was just pointing out that it was nonsensical, and being an upper-level class denotes better thinking before placing something like that out. No big deal, no one's riled up.
Yes it was just a joke. Kinda tried to link the unnatural relationship, which I have no problem with - what ever makes you happy makes you happy, with the unnatural creation of babies. Sorry no sexism intended at all.

Mrs. Calkin, it's spelled "handicap", not "hnadicap".
Wow....i'm ashamed....*shakes head in disappointment*
from the creepishly unioned girls

Sorry, Invader Zim moment.
But seriously.
Man, that totally shatters my universe.
Sorry about your universe and my spelling handicap..which is really more of a hand-eyecap (thanks, MP), but you are dodging my question!

Wow...relax a little bit...he was making a funny.
I agree with Courtney. Only closed-minded, intollerant people would say that. Being gay does not automatically mean that your children will be deaf.
thank you puckett
And it's not very fuuny, in my opinion.
I didn't say it was funny, i said it was A funny. Like how the cartoons in the paper are called the "funnies". They are rarely funny, but are funnies.

I love pancakes.
