We just finished writing our "Poems" about the war. Did watching the video about the soldiers and writing your poem effect your take on the book? Emotionally? Is it easier to picture everything in the book now?

Writing the poems and watching the movie made everything more real, and also made me more emotionally into the book. It was more real beacuse you saw how the soilders were so affected and how hard it was day to day for them and their loved ones. You feel sad for them and can picture better what they were going through.
The movie did help me to connect more with the characters in the book. Seeing people my age dying in the movie helped to put things into perspective for myself as well. Also having someone that I know personally fighting in the war in Iraq today helps me to understand how their families might be worried about them
After watching the movie you really get an understanding of the horrors the soldiers faced. As I have continued reading I have been able to picture the scenes and the men. Seeing the men on the movie really shows how the men were so young and scared.
The movie didn't really help me with picturing what the men were going through. When I read the book it isn't really that hard to picture what is going on. What I think is hard is imagining what they are going through or how they are feeling. It is hard to put yourself in the war situation because we were not there. It is hard to judge what the men did because you don't know how you would have reacted if you were in the same situation. War is war no matter where it is.
The movie helped me understand more about the book. I feel more passionate than when I first started. There is reading with emotion rather than just as an assignment.
After watching that movie, I don't know how it couldn't effect your take on the book emotionally. The movie really made everything in the book become more real. Although, I already could picture and emotionally connect with the characters and with what was going on in the book, the movie made everything just that much more real. To see real men dying on the video and to see what they actually went through helped to make everything more clear.
I thought the movie helped me to connect with the book so much more. Before when i was reading it i thought "This is a good book inspired by true events". The whole thing seemed fiction to me. Then i saw the movie and it remindecd me that this actually happenend. That the things and events that happen in the book were not made up, and they happened to the men i saw on that tv screen. Also hearing the letters they wrote back home really hit me hard. The things they talked about were almost unimaginable but you knew they were true

The book, meanwhile, is /based/ on reality, but in some ways is very abstract. The point, as I see it (and I think some of you will see what I mean as you get to the last chapters,) is more to leave an impression--to share with the reader the hardships involved and to show just how much it effected our men. It is profound--it has meaning!!--but it is not real in the same sense.
There aren't pictures. Most of the names aren't real. It isn't grounded. But it is very important.
I think the key would be to put those two different viewpoints together.
i think that the movie helped me picture how the soldiers relate to each other and cope with their problems.. there were alot of powerful lines said in the movie as well that stuck me. there was one quote in the movie that a young solider said that you cant get close to any one person, meaning they could die any day. that would be so devastating to go off to war in a foreign place with nobody you knew and not even be able to get "too" close to a person when your spending your whole day with them.
reading the words in the book helps you to imagen the life of a soldier, but actually seeing a real soldier in the place he fights is much more intense. Also, wrighting a poem helps you go deep in your soul and connect passionately to the poeple you are reading about.
watching the movie stress the point that the boys werent over in nam just fighting. they were making bonds with the other men in their co. The bonds between the men were important. watching the movie also reminded us what all they were doing over there besies just fighting.

The movie was just so sad because you actually got to see the young soldiers trying to survive and bond with eachother. Some of the soldiers in the film even admitted that they were all scared every single day. They are brave men who I do not think deserved to be put in that kind of situation so young. They needed to grow up first and finish enjoying the rest of their teen hood!
I thought the movie was absolutely fantastic! It helped to connect so much more to the book and just in general helped you feel more attached to the soldiers and what they were going through. I feel more of an emotional attachment to the soldiers. The way the movie layed out the letters and had the video clips in the background was just great. Kudos to the producers! But yes, I found it to help me better illustrate what was going on in the book as well.
