So Predictable

In the end of Frankenstein, Victor dies and Harold consequently decides to kill himself. Shocking? It shouldn't be. The whole book was pretty easy to figure out.

So, what in your opinion SHOULD have happened? Should Victor have died? Should he have given Harold a Haroldette? Why was Victor so incredibly STUPID?

Feel free to comment.

I still ache for Harold--weeping at his father's bedside--in a chaotic tumult of grief for what should have been, for the vengance he had been denied, for the deaths he had caused, for the injuctices he had suffered...for his creator who despised him.. only because he represented the creator's own hubris and inadequacy.

I don't feel sorry for him...Harold even admitted to knowing the effects all his actions were causing and how it would make him feel later, AND how it would lead to his imminent demise, and he still did nothing to change it. As for Victor, as I've said before, he was a self-fulfilled prophecy so I don't feel sorry for him either. I hated the end, it was thoroughly predictable and exceedingly stupid. Victor should not have died; Elizabeth shouldn't have either; but both were his own fault.

i'm with mrs. calkin. Harold had a pretty sucky lifetime. i think Victor should have made Harold a wife/mate/companion/thingy. i mean, he had already made a huge mistake in creating Harold so why not just make the same mistake and instantly solve his problems?

I think Victor did the best thing he could think to do... I mean, obviously he didn't expect his new bride to be murdered on their wedding night. He was fully prepared to finish what he had started and take one for the team either by dying at the hands of the monster or doing the monster in... I think he made a wise decision not to create a companion for "Harold" because who knows what could have happened... He might have been responsible for the spawning of a new and hideous race of brutes that would terrorize mankind... The world will never know (luckily).

Part of me agrees that not making a companion for Harold was a wise choice. But then, making Harold in the first place was bad, so it's kind of the same reason there.

But there's a chance that had he made one, Harold would have stopped. It was loniness that drove him...so maybe that's what it woud have taken to fix it.

i dont feel sorry for either of them...Especially Vicor. He is a puddin' pop who created a monster and then couldn't back his crap up so he deserted him...HIS CREATION!!!And for Harold..ok so i do feel a little sorry for him just because he had a really crappy life but like courtney said...he knew the effect of his actions. He knew the results. And poor poor stupid little Elizabeth. Love is blind so you couldn't really expect her to know that the person she loved was putting her in danger. I hated the ending also! It was stupid and predictable...wheres the excitement in a predictable ending? i mean i could have wrote that ending....and thats not saying much ha ha!

I think it ended the only way it could. Towards the end i think it turned into a battle of creation vs. creator since neither had anything else to live for. It was time for Victor to die b/c all of his family was now dead, ultimatley b/c of him, his work and pursuit for knowdledge was long dead, and he had nothing else in his life. I think he died when he did b/c he wanted out of the battle and maybe in some very passive way took responsibilty for his creatin and knew he had to dies b/c of it. With no Victor, no mate, or no acceptance the monster wasn't left with much else to do then go die. He only killed to hurt Victor and now that he could not do that anymore he didnt want to continue to kill. I think the moster was sad b/c he did love Victor to an extent and also knew know that it had to be his time to go now too.
